Connecticutite, Connecticutan, Connecticuter?

Standard

Yesterday, I was talking to someone who was from Connecticut and she was telling me what it was like to grow up in Connecticut. It made me think, which I bet we all have done many times in our lives, what the heck do you call someone who is from Connecticut? It is easy for me because I am from California, so it is easy to know a Californian, but what about the states that end with a consonant or an -ing? This made me think that I really don’t know the Demonyms for the states and really should probably look this up! I actually didn’t even know what the word was for “the name for someone who is from a state” (which is exactly what I put into my google search)! So, if you were or are in the same boat as I was yesterday, here you go!

Have a Connecticuter day!

National…Day

Standard

Yesterday, in the middle of the day I finally got to my phone and checked Facebook for the first time. There were hundreds of posts about a National Sibling Day, so of course, I did my obligatory toast to my fabulous sister on the social media outlets. After realizing that everyone was so excited about National Sibling Day, I checked to see what other holidays were happening around the world for this week. Today happens to be International Louie Louie Day, National Cheese Fondue Day, National Eight-Track Tape Day, National Pet Day, World Parkinson’s Disease Day, and best of all…National Quartet Day! So take tonight to sit back, put on a CD with some good Beatles and Sixties music, add a little Louie Louie to the mix, eat some delicious delicate Cheese Fondue, hug your pet, send love to patience with Parkinson’s Disease, and watch some epic Jimmy Fallon Ragtime Gals Quartet!

Enjoy!

Worldly Tattoo Binge

Standard

“The word ‘tattoo’ derives from the Polynesian word ‘ta’ (‘to strike’), which describes the sound of a tattooing spike being knocked on skin. The first recorded references to the word ‘tattoo’ is in the papers of Joseph Banks (1743-1820), a naturalist aboard Captain Cook’s ship. Before Captain Cook brought the word to Europe, tattoos in the West were known as ‘prics’ or ‘marks.'” According to http://facts.randomhistory.com/tattoo-facts.html

Tattoos are widely known to be “addictive.” Is this true?

Tattoos are an intrinsic part of many cultures around the world. It helps to define self identity in some parts of the world, it marks the sign of a tribe, it is used in wedding rituals, it reflects the life of a loved one, it shows off beautiful art work, it sings a song, it sometimes represents signs of manhood for some cultures, the list is endless.

My main problem with tattoos, to answer my earlier question, is…yes, they are extremely addictive. My tattoos represents something special to me.  I wanted to get tattoos that best depicts the important adventures in my life – particularly the places I have been fortunate enough to indulge myself in and immerse myself in for a significant amount of time. This past summer, I went on quite a tattoo binge and added 2 more tattoos to my collection. I have a Spade that my sister, Grandma and I got on my 18th birthday; a claddagh because I had a summer internship in Ireland and was lucky enough to live in Dublin for a couple of months; I have the words Liwa Mairin, which means ‘Mermaid’ in Miskitu, the indigenous community I lived in and did research with for two summers in Nicaragua; the diamonds and Fleur De Lys for the languages I speak and my love and passion for France – I lived in France for a Fall a couple of years ago and it solidified my love and francophile passion for France; and finally an Ohm since I spent time in Nepal last year and fell in love with the culture. I am definitely waiting to get some more (hopefully one to represent my two months in Laos last year), just need to find some cash hidden away in order to get my next tattoo…I guess I can use that cash to travel a little more in France when I am there this summer. That is the problem, when I have money, I would rather spend it traveling. Oh the dilemmas of a traveller!!

So I just discussed my tattoos, what do your tattoos mean to you? If you don’t have one, what will be your first tattoo?
